The Last of Us S2 Trailer Smashes HBO Record Before Premiere

by George Oct 20,2025

While The Last of Us Season 2 hasn't premiered yet, its growing anticipation is already creating waves.

The latest Season 2 trailer debuted during SXSW has achieved record-breaking viewership, surpassing 158 million cross-platform views within just three days according to Warner Bros. Discovery. HBO reports this marks their highest-performing original content trailer to date, outperforming previous promotional materials by over 160%.

The series continues gaining momentum as both new and existing fans eagerly await Season 2. Current domestic viewership averages approximately 32 million cross-platform viewers per Season 1 episode—a significant increase from the 8.2 million same-day viewers recorded during the Season 1 finale in March 2023 (via Deadline). These numbers demonstrate the show's phenomenal success and the audience's enthusiasm for revisiting the story before the new season launches.

Season 2 will advance the timeline five years, plunging Joel and Ellie into heightened conflicts between themselves and an increasingly perilous world. Returning cast members Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Rutina Wesley will be joined by newcomers Kaitlyn Dever, Isabella Merced, Catherine O'Hara, and Jeffrey Wright.

During SXSW, creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin confirmed the return of spores—previously excluded from Season 1. The trailer hints at this development through a scene where Ellie (Bella Ramsey) encounters a spore-emitting infected.

"We're introducing greater numbers and variations of infected," Druckmann explained, "along with expanded transmission methods. Season 1 introduced the tendril concept from the game, and now Season 2 brings airborne elements."

"Spores are indeed returning," Mazin confirmed, with Druckmann adding: "We needed the right dramatic context for their introduction—which we've now established."

The Last of Us Season 2 premieres April 13, 2025 exclusively on HBO and HBO Max.
