The classic MOBA, Heroes of Newerth, unexpectedly shut down in 2022, may be poised for a comeback. While unconfirmed, the developer's recent reactivation of Heroes of Newerth's social media presence—dormant for over three years—suggests a possible announcement is brewing, reigniting anticipation for this former League of Legends and Dota 2 competitor.
Following the success of the Warcraft 3 mod Dota, numerous studios developed their own Dota-inspired games. The simple yet captivating concept of two teams battling to destroy each other's base quickly gained popularity. League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Heroes of Newerth were prominent MOBAs in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Unfortunately, Heroes of Newerth ultimately couldn't maintain its competitive edge, leading to its server closure in 2022. However, recent developments hint at a potential resurgence.
Personally, in MOBAs, I favor the scrappy top/off-lane bruiser role. In League of Legends, Aatrox and Mordekaiser are favorites; in Dota 2, I typically choose Axe, Sven, or Tidehunter. If this role is unavailable, I'm adaptable, although I prefer ranged carry over mid or support.
The first indication of a potential Heroes of Newerth return comes from recent social media activity. The official Twitter account's last post was in December 2021, a farewell message announcing the game's closure. After a three-year hiatus, the developer posted "Happy NEW Year" on January 1st (note the capitalized "NEW"). Furthermore, the Heroes of Newerth website now displays a subtle animation of the game's logo silhouette with surrounding particles. This wasn't a singular event; it immediately captured players' attention. Nostalgia flooded in, with many recalling fond memories of Heroes of Newerth. Speculation about a return intensified, with comments such as "Don't give me hope." Further fueling this theory, a subsequent post on January 6th featured an image of a large cracking egg. This second post heightened excitement, leading to various fan theories. Some predict HoN heroes might be integrated into Dota 2, while others anticipate a mobile version.
The renewed social media activity surrounding Heroes of Newerth has undeniably thrilled players, demonstrating the enduring interest in the game. The developer's intentions remain unclear, but if the speculation proves accurate, it will be fascinating to see how Heroes of Newerth fares against current top-tier MOBAs.
