The 2010 film "The Social Network," which chronicled the founding of Facebook, is officially getting a sequel.
According to Deadline, Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin will write the screenplay and direct the follow-up, with a focus on Facebook's more recent controversies.
Sorkin is expected to draw heavily from the revelations in the Wall Street Journal's "The Facebook Files," a series based on leaked internal documents that showed the company was aware of the societal damage its algorithms were amplifying.
Sorkin has publicly stated he believes Facebook played a role in the events of January 6, 2021, though sources stress this sequel won't be solely about that day. The film will also explore social media's impact on younger users and its effects outside the United States.
While Sorkin has a clear direction, the project remains in early development with no casting decisions yet. It's unclear if Jesse Eisenberg will return as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, though both Sorkin and Eisenberg have expressed interest in a sequel in the past.
"Oh, yeah," Eisenberg told IndieWire in 2019 when asked about reprising the role. "To play a good role in a popular project is very rare. This was a chance to portray a complex character you'd normally find in a stage play or an art film, but on a massive scale. For me, that was incredibly fortunate."
