Sony Pulled GTA 6 Parody Game Grand Taking Ages From the PlayStation Store — but It’s Now Cleared for Release on Steam

by Nicholas Feb 21,2025

The creators of the controversial Grand Theft Auto 6 parody, Grand Taking Ages, have successfully launched the game on Steam after its removal from the PlayStation Store. The game, a parody management simulator about running a game development studio, was initially pulled by Sony due to concerns over its design and marketing.

Grand Taking Ages, initially released with a May 2025 release date and listed on the PlayStation Store, employed AI-generated art and a satirical approach to highlight the long-awaited release of Rockstar's GTA 6. This, however, led to its removal.

Grand Taking Ages is now available on Steam.

Following a "thorough" review process with Valve, the game was approved for Steam. Key changes were implemented to secure approval, including removing the "VI" from the title, revising the logo and descriptions, and updating the visuals to better distinguish it from GTA 6. While generative AI remains a core component, its use, particularly for voiceovers, was disclosed to Valve in accordance with Steam's AI policies.

The updated Steam page description reads:

Coming Soon Since Forever! Start your game dev journey in mom's garage! Battle angry fans, dodge ruthless journalists, and perfect the art of "creative" deadlines. Survive on pizza and energy drinks while building your dream studio into... a slightly better garage!

The developer, Violarte, adopted a proactive approach with Valve, engaging with their team before submission to ensure compliance with guidelines. They cite other successful GTA parodies, such as Grand Theft Hamlet, as precedent for the protection of parody under fair use.

The game's trailer utilizes AI-generated voiceovers.

Violarte has now requested reinstatement on the PlayStation Store, highlighting the successful Steam launch as evidence of the game's revised compliance. The contrasting approaches of Sony and Valve highlight the differing curation policies of the respective platforms, with Steam's more open approach allowing for a wider range of content, including AI-generated material. GTA 6 is still slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in Fall 2025.
