The announcement that development on *Space Marine 3* has commenced sent shockwaves through the Warhammer 40,000 community, sparking both excitement and concern about the future of *Space Marine 2*. Publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive made the surprise announcement in mid-March, just six months after the release of *Space Marine 2*. This timing raised questions about the amount of content planned for *Space Marine 2* to keep its player base engaged.
In response to these concerns, both companies released a blog post addressing the future of *Space Marine 2*. They assured fans that the development of *Space Marine 3* does not signal the end of support for *Space Marine 2*. "Mid-March, we announced that *Space Marine 3* had begun development and we’re excited to see your enthusiasm, although we hear those of you who fear for *Space Marine 2* and its future support," the statement read. They clarified that no development teams are shifting focus from *Space Marine 2* and that the game will continue to receive new content as planned.
The roadmap for *Space Marine 2* remains intact, with Patch 7 scheduled for release in mid-April. Additionally, players can look forward to the introduction of a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons in the coming months. The developers teased that there are more surprises in store, even beyond what dataminers have uncovered.
The announcement of *Space Marine 3* is seen as the beginning of a long-term project, with release still years away. "This announcement simply marks the genesis of a new project, years away from release. We’ve made a decision and have just started the process," the statement noted, emphasizing their ongoing commitment to *Space Marine 2* and expressing gratitude for the community's support.
The major highlight from the blog post is the promise of a new class for *Space Marine 2*, with speculation centering around the possibility of an Apothecary or a Librarian class. The latter would bring warp-powered abilities into the game, adding a new dimension to gameplay. Fans are also excited about the prospect of new melee weapons, with many expressing a desire to see the iconic axe from Secret Level's Warhammer 40,000 animated episode included, a wish that has already inspired modders to create their own versions.
The decision to move forward with *Space Marine 3* aligns with the success of *Space Marine 2*. In an interview with IGN following the launch of *Space Marine 2*, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits hinted at the potential for story DLC and revealed that ideas for *Space Marine 3* were already in discussion. "Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel," Willits said, suggesting a continuation of the narrative with new enemy factions and chapters to explore.
