Star Wars Outlaws Gets More Bad Sales News

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft's foray into open-world Star Wars gaming, is facing significant challenges. The game, released in August 2024, has reportedly underperformed commercially, falling short of Ubisoft's sales projections and triggering a sharp drop in the company's stock price. Adding to the woes, industry reports indicate that Star Wars Outlaws is being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Negative player reception, particularly concerning the combat and stealth mechanics, has contributed to the game's struggles. While initial reviews were generally positive, subsequent player feedback highlighted significant flaws. Though Ubisoft addressed some issues through updates, these changes failed to significantly improve sales. In Europe, Star Wars Outlaws recently ranked only 47th in 2024's best-selling video game charts.

The success of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a critically acclaimed sequel to a popular title, provides a stark contrast. Its strong reception upon release in April 2023, along with a later-released update expanding its platform availability, fueled continued sales momentum.

Ubisoft and developer Massive Entertainment are banking on planned post-launch DLC to revitalize Star Wars Outlaws. The first expansion, "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, launched in November. A second expansion, "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune," promising the return of Hondo Ohnaka, is slated for Spring 2025. However, whether this DLC will be enough to overcome the game's initial setbacks remains to be seen. The disparity in sales between Outlaws and Jedi: Survivor highlights the challenges of competing in the crowded Star Wars gaming market, particularly when facing a well-established and beloved franchise entry.
