Stardew's Preserves Jars: Upgrade Your Farm's Earnings

by Christian Feb 20,2025

This Stardew Valley guide explores the profitable use of Preserves Jars for crafting artisan goods. While Kegs and Jelly production are popular later in the game, Preserves Jars offer an early-game advantage for maximizing profits from fruits, vegetables, and foraged items.

Preserves Jar

Obtaining Preserves Jars:

The Preserves Jar recipe unlocks at Farming Level 4, requiring 50 Wood, 40 Stone, and 8 Coal. These materials are readily accessible early in the game. Players also receive one as a reward for completing the Quality Crops Bundle (or Rare Crops Bundle in the remixed version) in the Community Center, and they may occasionally appear in the Prize Machine.

Artisan Goods Production:

Preserves Jars transform various items into artisan goods:

Jelly Jelly: Created from fruits. The selling price is doubled (plus 50g), and edible fruits also yield doubled health and energy. Inedible fruits provide a smaller health and energy boost. Processing time is 2-3 days.

Pickles Pickles: Made from vegetables, mushrooms, and foraged items (only those with positive energy value when consumed). The selling price is doubled (plus 50g), with edible items providing a 1.75x increase in health and energy. Inedible items offer a smaller boost. Processing time is 2-3 days.

Caviar Caviar: Made from Sturgeon Roe. Provides a significant selling price (500g) and a substantial health and energy boost. Processing time is 4 days.

Aged Roe Aged Roe: Made from any fish roe other than Sturgeon. The selling price is 60g plus the base fish price. Processing time is 2-3 days.

The Artisan profession (Farming Level 10) boosts the selling price of all these goods by 40%. Note that item quality doesn't affect the final selling price, so use your lowest-quality produce for maximum profit.

Preserves Jars vs. Kegs

Preserves Jars vs. Kegs:

Preserves Jars are faster than Kegs, making them ideal for early-game profit. They are most efficient for fruits under 50g and vegetables/forage under 160g base value. High-yield, low-value crops like eggplants, wild berries, corn, and tomatoes are excellent choices. Preserves Jars are also essential for processing fish roe and mushrooms, which cannot be used in Kegs.

This updated guide incorporates the 1.6 update, which significantly expanded the range of foraged items usable in Preserves Jars, including items like Dandelions and Purple Mushrooms.
