Steam is now mandating that all developers declare whether their games utilize kernel-mode anti-cheat technology. This follows community concerns regarding the intrusiveness of such systems.
A recent Steamworks update introduces a new tool allowing developers to specify their game's anti-cheat implementation. While disclosure for non-kernel-based systems remains optional, kernel-mode anti-cheat usage is now compulsory. This move aims to improve transparency and address player anxieties.
Kernel-mode anti-cheat, which directly examines system processes, has sparked debate. Unlike traditional methods focusing on in-game behavior, kernel-mode solutions access low-level system data, raising concerns about performance, security, and privacy.
Valve's action reflects feedback from both developers seeking clear communication channels and players demanding greater transparency about anti-cheat software and installations. The new feature streamlines communication and provides players with more informed choices.
Launched October 31st, 2024, at 3:09 a.m. CST, the update is already live. Counter-Strike 2's Steam page now displays its use of Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC), showcasing the change. While largely praised as "pro-consumer," some criticized minor presentation issues and questioned the handling of translations and diverse anti-cheat classifications (e.g., PunkBuster). Concerns about kernel-mode anti-cheat's invasiveness persist.
Despite initial mixed reactions, Valve's commitment to consumer protection is evident, highlighted by their transparency regarding recent California legislation against misleading digital goods advertising. The long-term impact on community apprehension toward kernel-mode anti-cheat remains to be seen.
