SteamOS Debuts on Non-Valve System

Lenovo's Legion Go S: The First Third-Party SteamOS Handheld

Lenovo has unveiled the Legion Go S, a groundbreaking handheld gaming PC, marking the first third-party device to ship with Valve's SteamOS. This Linux-based operating system, previously exclusive to the Steam Deck, offers a smoother, console-like experience compared to Windows-based competitors like the Asus ROG Ally X and MSI Claw 8 AI+.

The Legion Go S, announced at CES 2025, comes in two versions:

Lenovo Legion Go S: SteamOS Edition

  • Operating System: Valve's SteamOS
  • Launch Date: May 2025
  • Price: $499
  • Specifications: 16GB RAM / 512GB storage
  • Key Feature: Full feature parity with Steam Deck, receiving identical software updates (excluding hardware-specific adjustments).

Lenovo Legion Go S: Windows 11 Edition

  • Operating System: Windows 11
  • Launch Date: January 2025
  • Price: $599 (16GB RAM / 1TB storage), $729 (32GB RAM / 1TB storage)

While the SteamOS version boasts a streamlined, optimized experience, the Windows 11 version provides familiarity for users accustomed to the Windows ecosystem. Lenovo currently has no plans to offer SteamOS on its flagship Legion Go 2, but this could change depending on the success of the Legion Go S SteamOS variant.

Valve's commitment extends beyond the Legion Go S. A public SteamOS beta for other handheld gaming PCs is slated for release in the coming months, opening the door for broader adoption of this popular operating system. For now, Lenovo holds the exclusive title of Valve's first official third-party SteamOS partner.
