"Street Fighter Movie Gets New Director"

by Evelyn Mar 29,2025

A new Street Fighter movie is in the works, with Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the absurd comedy show The Eric Andre Show, set to direct. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this new film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, with a release date already set for March 20, 2026. Capcom, the game's creator, is reportedly "deeply involved" in the project.

This marks another attempt to bring the iconic fighting game franchise to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film that featured Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Despite mixed reviews at the time, the film has since become a cult classic.

While casting details are yet to be announced, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life. Initially, the film was to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me, but they left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a shift towards a more absurdist tone, which could be exciting for fans who enjoy the game's more whimsical elements.

In the meantime, gamers can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review.
