Warframe's TennoCon 2024: A Blast from the Past with Warframe: 1999
TennoCon 2024 delivered a knockout punch with the announcement of Warframe: 1999, a massive update promising a nostalgic trip back to the year 1999. This isn't just another expansion; it's a complete immersion into an alternate 1999 Earth ravaged by a Y2K-fueled Techrot virus.
Before the main event arrives in Winter 2024, a prologue quest, "The Lotus Eaters," launches in August 2024. Reuniting players with a beloved Warframe character, this prologue sets the stage for the 1999 storyline and introduces Sevatgoth Prime and their exclusive weaponry. Completing "The Lotus Eaters" is a prerequisite for experiencing Warframe: 1999.
The heart of Warframe: 1999 is Höllvania, a 90s-inspired city overrun by Techrot. Players navigate this corrupted landscape using the new Atomicyles, futuristic vehicles capable of bullet jumps, drifts, and even explosive maneuvers. Leading the charge is the Hex team, six heroes each equipped with a Protoframe – a Warframe design showcasing the human form beneath. The team includes Arthur (Excalibur), Aoi (Mag), and Quincy (the new CYTE-09 Warframe). CYTE-09 will later be available in the Origin system, sporting a stylish beret.
The Hex team boasts an impressive voice cast, featuring Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler. Players can interact with them via an in-game instant messaging system, adding a unique social element to the experience.
Adding to the 90s atmosphere, players will face off against On-lyne, a Technocyte-infected boy band led by Zeke (voiced by Nick Apostolides). Their infectiously catchy music will be available on major streaming platforms. Their hit single, "Party of Your Lifetime," is already generating buzz.
A significant upgrade to the fashion system is also included. Players can now equip two fashion frame loadouts and switch between them seamlessly. The introduction of Gemini Skins allows players to bring Protoframes like Arthur and Aoi into the Origin System. These skins include fully voiced lines for combat and idle moments, enhancing the experience with the star-studded voice cast.
Beyond Warframe: 1999, Digital Extremes is collaborating with THE LINE to produce an anime short based on the update, launching later this year. Additionally, high-fidelity Heirloom skins for Ember (available now) and Rhino (early 2025) are also on the horizon.
Warframe: 1999 is set to launch this Winter 2024. Download Warframe now from the App Store to prepare for this exciting new chapter.
