There's a New Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition Coming in November, but Still No Winds of Winter

by Natalie Mar 19,2025

George R.R. Martin recently shared exciting news on his blog, though not about the highly anticipated The Winds of Winter. Instead, he unveiled the cover art for the illustrated edition of A Feast for Crows, the fourth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series to receive this special treatment. The artwork is by Jeffrey R. McDonald.

A Feast for Crows: The Illustrated Edition is slated for release on November 4, 2025. Pre-orders are now open at major book retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target, among others.

This announcement is welcome news for collectors of the illustrated editions. The last release, A Storm of Swords, debuted in November 2020, making this a five-year gap between illustrated editions.

Beyond the stunning illustrations, this edition will also include a foreword by Joe Abercrombie. Martin promises a sneak peek at some interior illustrations later this spring. For those wanting to complete their collection, the illustrated editions of A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and A Storm of Swords are currently available.

The Winds of Winter: Still Waiting?

Unfortunately, there's still no firm release date for The Winds of Winter. Martin's December 2024 interview hinted at the possibility that he may not complete the series in his lifetime, despite having already written 1,100 pages (as confirmed in November 2023). While this news is disappointing for long-time fans who have waited nearly 14 years, there remains a glimmer of hope for the series' eventual completion, perhaps by another author. It seems likely that the illustrated editions of the first five books will be completed before The Winds of Winter sees the light of day.

Do you think George R.R. Martin will finish A Song of Ice and Fire?
