WoW Patch 11.1 Introduces Two New Races

Summary

  • Patch 11.1 in World of Warcraft introduces Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races with Goblin jetpacks.
  • The Undermine zone in Patch 11.1 will not allow flying, utilizing customizable cars and jetpacks instead.
  • Racers can expect challenges like ring collection, speed, and difficulty in the new Skyrocket races.

World of Warcraft is set to thrill players with two new types of races in Patch 11.1: the Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and the exhilarating Skyrocket races, which feature flying Goblin jetpacks. These races replace traditional Skyriding in the Undermine zone, introduced in the first major content update for World of Warcraft: The War Within.

Patch 11.1, dubbed "Undermined," transports players to the vast subterranean city of Undermine, the bustling capital of the Goblins. Despite its expansive layout, flying is prohibited in this zone. Instead, players can zoom through the city using D.R.I.V.E., a dynamic and customizable car-like mount that surpasses the speed of Skyriding. World of Warcraft confirmed the introduction of Breakneck races, designed to maximize the potential of the D.R.I.V.E. system.

In addition to the Breakneck races, Skyrocket races introduce a novel challenge where players navigate the skies using Goblin jetpacks. This new form of movement blends elements of both existing flying mechanics: players can't stop mid-air like in Steady flight, yet they maintain momentum and altitude unlike in Skyriding. As demonstrated by WoW content creator MrGM on the Public Test Realm, racers gain speed by collecting rings, but increased speed leads to less responsive turning, adding an extra layer of difficulty to Skyrocket races.

Because flying is not permitted in Undermine, Skyriding races are absent from the zone. However, both Breakneck and Skyrocket races offer achievements for completing each race within Bronze, Silver, and Gold times. Additionally, reverse versions of all Skyrocket and D.R.I.V.E. Breakneck races are available, although there are no Advanced or Challenge courses akin to those found in Skyriding races.

Initial reactions to the Skyrocket races have been varied. Some fans are eager to experience this new racing style, while others find the flying mechanics stiff and less responsive than Skyriding. Fortunately, with Patch 11.1 still in development, there's ample time for Blizzard to refine these races before their release, expected around February.
