In a bold statement, Bob Gale, co-creator of the cherished science fiction series "Back to the Future," has a clear message for fans eagerly awaiting a new installment: "F**k you." Speaking candidly to Yahoo, Gale, who alongside Robert Zemeckis wrote and produced all three films in the franchise, emphasized that there will be no canonical continuation of "Back to the Future."
Gale shared these sentiments backstage at the Saturn Awards, responding to the frequent question from fans, "When are you going to do Back to the Future 4?" with a succinct and definitive, "F**k you." This stance comes at a time when the film industry is rife with reboots and sequels, often met with mixed reviews, such as "The Matrix Resurrections" and "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," both of which were poorly received by audiences and critics alike. In contrast, "Back to the Future" seems destined to stay firmly rooted in the past, despite its iconic status.
The original "Back to the Future" film, released in 1985, follows the adventures of high school student Marty McFly, who is accidentally sent back in time by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown. While the first movie is celebrated as one of the most iconic sci-fi films ever made, its sequels, released in 1989 and 1990, did not achieve the same level of acclaim.
Despite the absence of new films for over three decades, the "Back to the Future" franchise continues to thrive through its enduring legacy and influence. It has also expanded into other mediums, including a successful Broadway musical. Gale revealed plans for a stage production on Royal Caribbean Cruises and mentioned his collaboration with Michael J. Fox, the actor who portrayed Marty McFly, on a book about Fox's experiences.
