The GeForce RTX 4090 may be a generation behind the new Blackwell 50 series GPUs, but it remains one of the most powerful graphics cards available today, outperforming the likes of the RTX 5080, RTX 4080 Super, Radeon RX 9070 XT, and RX 7900 XTX. The only GPU that surpasses it is the RTX 5090, which is notoriously difficult to find at its original price due to high demand and markups.
With the RTX 4090 now discontinued, finding one has become increasingly challenging. However, Dell offers two prebuilt gaming PC options that include the RTX 4090 at competitive prices. The Alienware Aurora R16 starts at $2,999.99, while the Dell Tower Plus is available from $2,849.99. These are among the best deals for an RTX 4090 equipped system, especially since other manufacturers like Lenovo and HP have stopped offering RTX 4090 prebuilt PCs.
Priced at $2,999.99, the Alienware Aurora R16 comes equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265F CPU, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5200MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. For those focused purely on gaming, upgrading to the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K isn't necessary as the included processor, with its max turbo frequency of 5.3GHz and 20 cores, is more than sufficient. The system is cooled effectively by a 240mm all-in-one liquid cooler and powered by a 1,000W 80PLUS Platinum power supply.
Available for $2,849.99 after a 10% discount from its original $3,149.99 price, the Dell Tower Plus features similar specs to the Alienware Aurora R16, including an Intel Core Ultra 7 265F CPU, GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5200MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. For an additional $100, upgrading to the Intel Core Ultra 7 285K is recommended, as it not only enhances performance but also upgrades the cooling system to a more robust tower heatsink fan. The system is also powered by a 1,000W 80PLUS Platinum power supply.
The RTX 4090 stands as the top performer among the RTX 40 series GPUs. In comparison to the new Blackwell cards, only the RTX 5090, with its $2,000 MSRP, offers superior performance. The RTX 4090 can comfortably handle 4K gaming at over 60fps with all settings maxed out and ray tracing enabled, especially when DLSS is utilized. The only challenge it faces, like all GPUs, is with path tracing, which is rarely used outside of benchmarks or show-offs. For most gamers, the RTX 4090's performance is more than adequate, making the RTX 5090's additional power somewhat superfluous.
"The RTX 4090 may be large and costly, but its performance is truly exceptional. Currently, it's the only card of its generation widely available, making direct comparisons with past models necessary. Its impressive hardware specs combined with DLSS 3 AI technology justify its $1,599 price tag, delivering unmatched frame rates."
Dell offers the Alienware Aurora R16 with the new GeForce RTX 5080 GPU for $2,499.99 shipped. In our review, Jackie notes that "If you have a recent high-end graphics card, the RTX 5080 might not offer a significant upgrade. Its performance over the RTX 4080 is marginal, though DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation does enhance visuals in supported games. However, for those upgrading from older GPUs, the RTX 5080 delivers a substantial performance boost, particularly when leveraging Nvidia's AI features."
