Apex Legends Isn’t Doing the Business for EA, So It’s Making Apex Legends 2.0 to Come Out After Battlefield

EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and Plans for a 2.0 Reboot

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA acknowledges its underperformance and unveils plans for a significant overhaul, dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0." While boasting a massive player base exceeding 200 million, the game's revenue has fallen short of EA's expectations.

In a recent financial call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed the game's financial struggles despite its popularity. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to maintain the existing community through quality-of-life improvements, anti-cheat measures, and consistent content updates. While progress has been made, Wilson admitted it hasn't been sufficient to meet their targets.

The proposed solution is Apex Legends 2.0, a major update intended to revitalize the franchise, attract new players, and boost revenue. However, its release is strategically planned to avoid clashing with the upcoming Battlefield release, anticipated before April 2026. Therefore, Apex Legends 2.0 is likely to launch sometime during EA's 2027 fiscal year (ending March 2027).

Wilson emphasized EA's long-term commitment to the franchise, envisioning Apex Legends as a sustained success story, comparable to other long-running titles. He reiterated the ongoing investment in the community and the development of a substantial update post-Battlefield launch. This update, Apex 2.0, is not intended as the final iteration of the game, but rather a significant step in its evolution.

The planned overhaul echoes Activision's approach to Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. While the success of that reboot remains debated, EA will undoubtedly learn from both successes and failures in the battle royale market as they strive to increase Apex Legends' player base and profitability. Despite its current trajectory towards record low concurrent player counts on Steam (though it remains a top performer), EA remains optimistic about the franchise's future.
