Conquer the Legendary Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a pivotal moment in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, presents a significant challenge. This guide will help you overcome this notoriously difficult stage in Chapter 2. The objective: defeat Dong Zhuo.

Initial Strategy:

Begin by clearing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right corner. Conquering two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Continue your base-clearing; defeating Zhang Liao, the cavalry commander, rewards you with the twin pike weapon. Once all bases are secured, assault Hulao Gate.

Facing Dong Zhuo's Forces:

The initial assault is chaotic. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he initiates his Grand Tactic. This weakens the defenses, allowing you to advance.

Lu Bu's Arrival:

Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation. Lu Bu is overwhelmingly powerful at this stage. Instead, focus on eliminating officers near the main battle to maintain morale, which Lu Bu significantly drains. Lu Bu will eventually attack your main base (Yuan Shao). Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will defend, giving you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. This creates a time limit; if Liu Bei's forces are routed, Lu Bu will defeat Yuan Shao, ending the mission.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

After Lu Bu's departure, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Capture the northern and western bases. With all three squads ready, and fully healed, charge towards Dong Zhuo.

Dong Zhuo will use Grand Tactics (fireball attacks). The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage if available, break through the enemy lines, and eliminate soldiers and officers near the catapults. Your forces will then destroy them, ending the Grand Tactic.

A second Grand Tactic follows, requiring the defeat of an officer. Proceed to the stairs on the right; however, be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, now fighting for Dong Zhuo. A duel with Diaochan is advisable to avoid being overwhelmed.

After thwarting the second Grand Tactic, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should easily overwhelm his remaining troops. Dian Wei might even initiate a Grand Tactic, further easing your victory. While a duel is tempting, a standard defeat of Dong Zhuo is sufficient at this point.
