Funcom, the developer behind the highly anticipated multiplayer survival game Dune: Awakening, has provided a detailed update on the game’s business model and post-launch plans. The studio has confirmed that the game will have a full launch on May 20, rather than an Early Access release. Inspired by Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel and its subsequent movie adaptations, Dune: Awakening will not require a subscription despite its classification as an MMO.
Instead of a subscription, Funcom plans to expand Dune: Awakening through free updates that will introduce new content and features. The game will also adopt a traditional business model that includes optional downloadable content (DLCs). Funcom highlighted its track record of supporting its long-running MMOs, such as Anarchy Online and Conan Exiles, which continue to receive free updates, DLCs, and expansions well after their initial launch. The developer assured fans that Dune: Awakening will follow a similar path, with ongoing free updates to enhance the gaming experience.
The standard edition of Dune: Awakening is priced at $49.99. For those looking for more exclusive content, the Deluxe Edition ($69.99) and the Ultimate Edition ($89.99) are available. Both editions offer a five-day head start and various unique items. The Deluxe and Ultimate Editions include a Season Pass, which grants access to four DLCs over time, with the first one available at launch.
Purchasers of the Deluxe Edition will also receive the armor of the Sardaukar, the feared elite military force from the game. The Ultimate Edition includes all of the above, plus Paul Atreides’ iconic stillsuit from the 2021 film, a digital artbook, a digital soundtrack, unique color patterns, and the Caladan Palace Set, complete with building pieces, placeables, and decorations.
Pre-ordering any edition of Dune: Awakening comes with additional rewards, including a universal color pattern that can be applied to vehicles, weapons, and armor, and the Terrarium of Muad’Dib, an in-base decoration featuring the iconic desert mouse.
Funcom has also outlined the PC features and system requirements for Dune: Awakening. The game supports advanced graphical technologies such as Nvidia’s DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, AMD’s FSR, and Intel’s XeSS 2.
