Ex-Sony Director Slams Until Dawn Screenwriter Snub

by Mila Nov 18,2025

A former PlayStation narrative lead has launched a petition urging the Until Dawn film team to properly credit the original game writers.

As reported by Eurogamer, Kim MacAskill's campaign calls on Sony – an industry leader – to establish new standards by updating the film's credits, specifically advocating for fair recognition in transmedia adaptations.

"After departing Until Dawn, I noticed filmmakers received full credits while the game's pioneering developers were merely acknowledged as 'based on the Sony game,'" MacAskill stated.

"These creators dedicated years crafting something extraordinary. Their names deserve recognition... Instead? Complete erasure. No acknowledgment. No appreciation."

On LinkedIn, MacAskill contrasted HBO's treatment of The Last of Us – which credits both Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann – with Until Dawn's approach.

The director revealed Sony executives explicitly told her: "The IP I personally developed would NEVER bear my name since I was salaried," addressing Sony directly: "I fail to understand why Neil Druckmann receives preferential treatment over others in your company."

When questioning intellectual property rights for her Sony-developed creations, MacAskill was informed the corporation "sympathized" but maintained its position was "company-wide policy, nothing personal."

"All I sought was proper accreditation and minimal adaptation rights," she explained.

Her petition states: "I implore Sony to reform its IP accreditation practices for transmedia projects. Even executive producer credits would honor the visionaries behind these transformative stories."

"This fight extends beyond Until Dawn creators – it's about industry integrity. Proper recognition ensures we keep inspiring future generations of boundary-pushing creators. Support this cause demanding rightful acknowledgment in cross-media storytelling."

Coincidentally, reports suggest Until Dawn Remastered may join PlayStation Plus next month, potentially coinciding with the film's recent release. Our IGN review scored it 5/10, criticizing: "The Until Dawn film abandons the game's horror potential for derivative scare sequences."
