Exciting developments are stirring the Nintendo community with recent filings hinting at the possibility of a new GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The speculation stems from an FCC filing for a "game controller" that aligns with the Switch 2 specifications, suggesting a wireless Bluetooth controller. Enthusiasts on the internet, particularly on Famiboards, have dug deeper and believe that one of the images in the filing shows a label location that matches the unique design of the GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.
While some speculate this could be a Switch 2 Pro Controller, the prevailing theory points towards its integration with Nintendo’s Switch Online subscription service. This service already offers wireless classic controllers for retro gaming, leading fans to hope for a GameCube library on the platform. Nintendo has long been requested to bring GameCube classics to the Switch, but so far, it has focused on re-releasing games from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy eras. The prospect of a GameCube revival on the Nintendo Switch 2 has fans buzzing with anticipation.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a teaser trailer confirming its backward compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, details such as other game titles and the function of the new Joy-Con button remain undisclosed, although the theory of a Joy-Con mouse feature has gained some traction.
A patent filed by Nintendo last month suggested that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down, utilizing gyro mechanics similar to smartphones without screen locks. Unlike the original Switch, which used rails to secure Joy-Cons, the new model employs magnets, allowing for versatile attachment options. This could influence where players position buttons and ports, potentially sparking innovative gameplay mechanics if incorporated into the final product.
Analysts predict the Switch 2 might be priced between $400 and $500, with June being a potential launch month. While many details are still under wraps, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2 to reveal more about the console.
In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered on the current Nintendo Switch.
