The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: A Look at Take-Two's Strategy

The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their long-standing investment in the game. With GTA 6 expected to introduce a new and potentially improved GTA Online experience (possibly even a "GTA Online 2"), concerns are rising about the future of the current iteration. Will players' progress, time, and money invested be rendered obsolete?

This question was posed to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, who offered insights based on the company's experience with NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, was followed by NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017. Significantly, both versions continued to operate concurrently, ensuring continued support for existing players.

Zelnick, while avoiding specific comment on GTA Online's future due to unannounced projects, emphasized Take-Two's general approach: "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles." He highlighted the simultaneous operation of both NBA 2K Online versions as a demonstration of this commitment. "We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they're alive and we have this massive audience. So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”

This suggests that a potential GTA Online 2 wouldn't necessarily replace the original. Continued player engagement with the current GTA Online could lead to its continued support alongside any new iteration.

However, much about GTA 6 remains unknown. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar Games needs to provide more details soon, especially given the proximity of the anticipated Fall 2025 release. The possibility of a simultaneous release with (or after) Borderlands 4 in September 2025 adds to the anticipation. For now, Zelnick's comments offer a glimmer of hope for current GTA Online players, suggesting their investment may not be in vain.
