Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein is as intense as the legendary mad scientist himself. During the Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director shared a video message, giving fans a tantalizing glimpse into his highly anticipated adaptation of Frankenstein. Although del Toro mentioned that a trailer won't be available until this summer, Netflix treated audiences to a first-look image featuring Oscar Isaac as the iconic character.
"This film has been on my mind since I was a child—for 50 years," del Toro revealed in the video, as reported by Variety. "I've been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." As he spoke, he gestured towards the array of Frankenstein figures and collectibles in his dedicated Frankenstein room at his renowned Bleak House.
Del Toro also showcased some exclusive footage during the event. It featured Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth, who portrays a sophisticated aristocrat, and introduced Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster. Elordi's portrayal includes long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a striking glint of red in his eyes. Unfortunately, this footage is not yet available online.
"The character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography," del Toro explained. "It doesn’t get more personal than this."
Indeed, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy has been tirelessly working to bring this project to life for decades. Let's delve into the long journey of Netflix's upcoming Frankenstein movie...
