Once Human sits pretty at 230,000 peak player count, but it's still a long way out from mobile

by Simon Jan 07,2025

NetEase's post-apocalyptic survival game, Once Human, has achieved a remarkable 230,000 peak concurrent players on Steam since its PC debut. This impressive figure secured it a position among the top seven best-selling and top five most-played games. Further updates are planned, including a PvP mode pitting the Mayflies and Rosetta factions against each other, and a new PvE area in a challenging northern mountain region.

The game, set in a world ravaged by a catastrophic event leading to supernatural occurrences, is a highly anticipated title from NetEase. Interestingly, despite its successful PC launch, the mobile release, initially planned for September, has been delayed. Nevertheless, Once Human maintains its strong performance on Steam's sales and player count charts.

Initial Success, Potential Concerns?

The 230,000 player count represents a peak; average player numbers may be lower. This initial drop-off, especially considering the game's pre-release Steam wishlist count of over 300,000, could be a cause for concern for NetEase.

NetEase, known primarily for mobile game development, is actively expanding into the PC market. While Once Human boasts impressive visuals and gameplay, a rapid shift in their core audience might prove challenging.

The mobile launch of Once Human remains highly anticipated, though the date is yet to be confirmed. In the meantime, check out our list of the best and most anticipated mobile games of 2024 for other exciting titles!
