Japanese Fans Weigh In on Street Fighter Creator's New Saudi-Backed Boxing Game

by Adam May 14,2025

Exciting news has emerged in the gaming world as Takashi Nishiyama, the visionary behind Street Fighter, is set to collaborate with The Ring magazine on a brand-new boxing game. This announcement was made on the official X account of Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, who acquired The Ring in November 2024. The untitled game promises to feature original characters and harness the combined expertise of The Ring's boxing authority and Dimps' extensive experience in game development.

Dimps, Nishiyama's company, recently released Freedom Wars Remastered in January 2025, a modern console update of a PlayStation Vita classic. According to Alalshikh's tweet, development on the new boxing game is slated to begin soon. This venture marks another significant move by the Saudi Arabian royal family into the Japanese gaming industry, following their acquisition of 100% of SNK's shares in April 2024. The Ring has been actively involved in promoting SNK's upcoming Fatal Fury: City of Wolves, even hosting a boxing match collaboration at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on April 26, 2025. Nishiyama's past with SNK, where he created the Fatal Fury series and contributed to iconic titles like Metal Slug and King of Fighters, adds an extra layer of excitement to this new project.

The announcement of The Ring and Dimps collaboration has sparked a range of reactions among Japanese gaming enthusiasts, from astonishment and eagerness to play the game to curiosity about its final form. X user @ryo_redcyclone, known for Street Fighter-related posts, commented on Nishiyama's shift from street fighting to the rule-bound sport of boxing, expressing intrigue about how Nishiyama will approach this new challenge.

A key concern among fans is whether the structured rules of boxing will constrain Nishiyama's renowned creativity, particularly considering the unconventional characters and moves in his past works. For instance, Street Fighter's Balrog, a clear homage to Mike Tyson, employs moves like the Buffalo Head that defy professional boxing regulations. It remains to be seen whether The Ring and Dimps' new game will prioritize realism or embrace the rule-breaking flair of Nishiyama's previous titles.
