Jon Bernthal's Punisher Will Return After Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 in a Guardians of the Galaxy-Style Marvel Special

Jon Bernthal's Punisher is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not in the way you might expect. Following his appearance in Daredevil: Born Again, Bernthal will reprise his role in a standalone Marvel special, described as having a Guardians of the Galaxy-esque style. Even more exciting, Bernthal is co-writing the special with We Own This City director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, describes the project as "a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story."

This Punisher one-shot arrives as Marvel Television plans the return of the Defenders to Disney+. This street-level superhero team, featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, previously appeared on Netflix before transitioning to Disney+ and becoming official MCU canon.

Winderbaum previously hinted at the creative possibilities, stating, “It’s certainly exciting to be able to play in that sandbox… But I can just say that all those variables taken into account, it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring.”

Daredevil: Born Again, premiering March 4th, continues the Daredevil storyline from Netflix, bringing back familiar faces like the Punisher and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin. This time, they face a unique threat: the artistically inclined serial killer, Muse.
