Lies of P's director, Choi Ji-Won, has expressed openness to creating a multiplayer game after being inspired by the network test of Elden Ring: Nightreign. Dive deeper into the latest updates on the Overture DLC and what fans can anticipate from this eagerly awaited expansion.
Choi Ji-Won, the director behind Lies of P, found the network test of Elden Ring: Nightreign to be a refreshing experience. At the 2025 Game Developers Conference (GDC), he shared with Eurogamer his insights into the evolution of the Souls genre. Known for his admiration of FromSoftware titles, Choi's perspective on Lies of P reflects this influence.
Reflecting on Elden Ring: Nightreign, Choi remarked, "I've tried [Nightreign] and it was very refreshing and new. So that obviously gave me the impression that they're good developers, they always push their boundaries, their imagination and vision, and it shows. In turn, that for some reason motivated me to deliver the Overture experience as good as it could be."
This experience has led Choi to consider branching into multiplayer games, stating, "In terms of our future endeavours, we are definitely open to any sort of consideration in the future."
While Choi appreciates FromSoftware's work, he clarified in a Games Radar+ interview at the 2025 GDC that his inspiration spans a broad spectrum of games. He explained, "I'm a fan of many, many types of games, and that variety of different experiences and inspirations that I pick up with many different games I love, I sort of mold it into my own Lies of P experience. In the end, it's a combination of diverse inspirations that I get from many games that I love, and then I'm trying to transform that into a Lies of P experience that I'm developing for the fans of Lies of P now."
Choi disclosed that the Overture DLC is expected to take experienced players around 15-20 hours to complete. It's packed with numerous bosses and additional content that the team had initially wanted to include in the main game. He noted, "Overture is not a complete separate piece from the base game, and there's a lot of interconnectivity between the two, so developing the expansion was almost like an effort to complete the Lies of P experience, and that was challenging."
Overture serves as a prequel, taking players back to Krat during its darkest days, following a legendary Stalker. It incorporates new ideas, player feedback, and unused concepts that couldn't be included in the original release due to development constraints. Choi likened this DLC to a Director’s Cut, suggesting it completes the game's narrative arc.
He emphasized, "When we released the base game, we had to prioritize, as we mentioned, to do the best quality, so we couldn't deliver everything at once because we wanted to make sure what we can deliver has the best quality." The positive feedback from the community post-launch spurred the team to fulfill their vision with this expansion.
During an interview with IGN at the 2025 GDC, Choi clarified that the Overture DLC does not directly tie into the final cutscene of the base game. While the ending of Lies of P hinted at future possibilities for the series, Choi confirmed in a Director’s Letter in November 2023 that a sequel is in development, though details about Lies of P 2 remain under wraps.
Choi assured fans, "What I can certainly tell you is when we share such news or media and assets with you, you'll know for sure that we are ready to present it to you. And that follows very our strict focus on quality [amid] all the pressure that we talked about in the past. So that is the one promise that I can share with you, that when we actually share those contents with you and the news, we will be ready to share that with you."
He encouraged fans to revisit the base game for clues about what the DLC might offer and mentioned his interest in the fan theories circulating online, some of which he found intriguingly accurate.
Lies of P: Overture is slated for a Summer 2025 release, though an exact date has not been announced. It will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For the latest updates on the game, be sure to check out our dedicated article.
