John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the creative duo behind the critically acclaimed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, have been tapped to write the screenplay for Lionsgate's upcoming Monopoly movie. This announcement follows previous reports of various attempts to bring the classic board game to the big screen.
Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment will produce the film. Daley and Goldstein's involvement marks a significant step forward for the project, adding their proven comedic and adventure storytelling skills to the mix. Their recent credits also include the original film Mayday, as well as contributions to The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Previous attempts to adapt Monopoly into a feature film date back to 2007, with Ridley Scott initially expressing interest. Subsequent attempts, including scripts by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (2011) and Andrew Niccol (2015), and involvement from Kevin Hart and Tim Story (2019), ultimately failed to materialize.
However, Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro has revitalized the project, leading to the current collaboration with Daley and Goldstein. This new iteration promises a fresh approach, offering hope that this Monopoly adaptation will finally make it past "Go."
