M3GAN Re-Release: Enhanced with 'Second Screen' and Live Chatbot

by Emma May 29,2025

Blumhouse is gearing up to celebrate its 15th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, they’re re-releasing the 2022 hit M3GAN in theaters before the sequel debuts. This special event comes with a twist: it encourages smartphone use during the screening, making it quite a polarizing move.

As part of their Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder will host one-night-only showings of M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle. These events will feature Meta’s “Movie Mate” technology, allowing viewers to engage with M3GAN via a chatbot and enjoy exclusive second-screen content in real-time.

According to Variety, Movie Mate can be accessed by messaging the Instagram account @M3GAN. The goal? To enhance the traditional “second screen” experience and build buzz for M3GAN 2.0, set to premiere on June 27.

Audiences can look forward to sneak peeks, recorded messages from filmmakers and cast, and even surprise appearances in select locations. While this initiative aims to excite fans, it raises concerns about potentially disrupting the cinematic experience. The screenings will occur across various theaters nationwide: M3GAN on April 30, Annabelle on May 7, and Ma on May 14. Meanwhile, M3GAN 2.0 hits theaters in the U.S. on June 27. Time will tell how audiences respond to this innovative approach.
