George R.R. Martin has hinted at a potential Elden Ring movie, but acknowledges a significant hurdle to his involvement. The Game of Thrones author conceived the world and history for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco heavily featured Martin's contribution in promotional materials, crediting both Miyazaki and Martin for the game's world creation.
When asked by IGN about a potential Elden Ring sequel, Martin sidestepped the question but revealed discussions about an Elden Ring film adaptation. While not the first time he's teased such a project, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has also expressed openness to an adaptation, contingent on a strong collaborative partner, as FromSoftware lacks the expertise for such a venture.
However, Martin admitted that his heavy involvement in an Elden Ring movie might be hampered by his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter. The long-awaited sixth book in A Song of Ice and Fire series has faced significant delays, with Martin himself acknowledging the possibility of its incompletion. He's even commented on the numerous "obituaries" written about his writing career due to the delays. A Dance with Dragons, the previous book, was published in 2011, the same year HBO's Game of Thrones premiered, significantly increasing interest in Martin's work.
Regarding his contribution to Elden Ring, Martin described his role in world-building, collaborating with FromSoftware to establish the game's historical context. He explained the process of multiple sessions with the team, where he provided background lore and concepts which then inspired the team's creative development. He also noted that much of the world-building material created for the game remains unused, potentially providing ample content for future installments or adaptations. He draws a parallel to Tolkien's extensive background material for The Lord of the Rings, highlighting the vast potential for such a rich world.
