NetEase Games' commitment to releasing a new Marvel Rivals hero every half-season hasn't stopped a creative player from independently developing a playable Doctor Octopus.
Reddit user WickedCube recently unveiled a 30-second gameplay video showcasing a remarkably well-realized Doc Ock within the Marvel Rivals engine. The footage, seemingly from a testing environment, depicts a pre-Hulk Bruce Banner and a surprisingly fluid, eight-armed Doctor Octopus.
The character model, while rough around the edges, is instantly recognizable. Doc Ock's abilities include "Havoc Claw" (melee) and "Wrecking Grip" (ranged), utilizing his tentacles for magnetizing movement and traversal, effectively allowing flight near stable structures. The video has garnered significant attention, exceeding 16,000 upvotes.
WickedCube, an independent game developer, explained his inspiration: Doc Ock's unique tentacle mechanics present a significant development challenge, previously unaddressed in a fully playable 3D context. A recent PSN outage and exposure to impressive Doc Ock fan art provided the final impetus.
"It all started when PSN was down and I couldn’t play Marvel Rivals," WickedCube explained. "While browsing Twitter, I came across some really cool Doc Ock fan art. I thought, ‘Since I can't play right now, why not make it myself?’”
The overwhelmingly positive response has encouraged WickedCube to share his creation process through a future YouTube tutorial series and open-source the code on GitHub. He also plans to release playable versions on Itch.io.
NetEase's own Marvel Rivals update, launching February 21st, includes the Human Torch and The Thing, continuing the impressive post-launch character additions. While the studio isn't commenting on rumors, WickedCube's Doc Ock highlights the game's vast potential, with the developer already conceptualizing additional characters like Nightcrawler and Professor X. He praised NetEase's development approach, stating, "The designers clearly understand how to make a fun game, which, in my opinion, is the hardest thing to get right."
The upcoming Season 1 mid-season update will also feature balance adjustments and gameplay refinements.
