Marvel Rivals Players Are Risking Account Bans to Mod the Game Even After Season 1 Clampdown

by Hunter Feb 20,2025

Despite a Season 1 crackdown, Marvel Rivals players continue to risk account bans by using mods. Since the game's December launch, custom skins created via mods have been popular, transforming characters like Iron Man into Vegeta and Mantis into a goth. One mod even turns Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita.

NetEase, the developer, implemented asset hash checking to restrict mods, reiterating that their terms of service prohibit mods, cheats, and unauthorized third-party software. While NetEase warned of potential bans, a workaround is now circulating online, allowing continued modding, albeit with more complex steps.

Modder Prafit, who shared a workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users about the risk of bans, noting that while permanent bans haven't been observed, the possibility remains. New mods featuring the Fantastic Four characters, such as turning Mister Fantastic into Luffy, are already seeing thousands of downloads.

A tweet from @RivalsLeaks highlights the continued use of mods despite the risk. The lack of confirmed bans so far doesn't guarantee future safety.

NetEase's motivation for banning mods likely stems from potential revenue loss from in-game skin purchases, intellectual property concerns, and the impact mods might have on gameplay balance and game performance. Prafit even suggests that their workaround requires a high-spec PC.
