Mastering Parry Techniques in Avowed

by Emery May 06,2025

There's nothing quite like the thrill of parrying an enemy's attack in an action game, turning their aggression into a moment of triumphant counterattack. If you're eager to experience this in *Avowed*, here's your guide on how to master the art of parrying.

How to Unlock Parry in Avowed

To parry in *Avowed*, you first need to unlock the ability. Head into the game's menu, navigate to the "Abilities" screen, and find the "Ranger" tab. You'll spot the Parry ability in the top center of the middle column. To unlock it, you must allocate an Ability point into any of the three core trees. Once that's done, you can unlock Parry.

Parry comes in three ranks, detailed below for your convenience:

RankPlayer Level RequirementLevel Description
1N/A (1 Point Spent)Unlocks Parry.
2Player Level 5Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun when Parrying enemies.
3Player Level 8Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun when parrying enemies.

At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," an additional ability that allows you to parry and block arrows and other projectiles.

To execute a parry in *Avowed*, you need to time your block perfectly, just before an enemy's attack lands. You'll hear a distinctive metal clanking sound and see a visual cue on your screen as the enemy stumbles back from your successful parry. The timing can be tricky and varies slightly between enemies, but with practice, you'll master it. It's less challenging than in games like *Dark Souls* or *Elden Ring*.

Parrying Isn’t Always an Option

Be aware that not all attacks in *Avowed* can be parried. If you see a red circle, you'll need to dodge those attacks instead. Additionally, not every weapon in the game is suitable for parrying. Single-handed and two-handed weapons can generally parry, but only if they're not in your off-hand. Shields in the off-hand can also be used for parrying. However, ranged weapons like guns, wands, and bows, as well as grimoires, cannot parry, so remember, in *Avowed*, the pen is not mightier than the sword when it comes to parrying.

What Parrying Does (& Why You Might Want to Do It)

Parrying in *Avowed* is a powerful tool for stunning and staggering your attacker, allowing you to unleash significant damage. It's an excellent defensive move that also sets up offensive opportunities. This ability is particularly beneficial for melee-focused characters who engage enemies up close. If your build leans towards ranged attacks, you might want to skip parrying. However, the beauty of *Avowed* is the ease and low cost of respeccing, so you can always try out Parry and change your mind later without much hassle.

And that's how you can master the art of parrying in *Avowed*.
