For years, Monster Hunter players have longed for the freedom to wear any armor they desire, regardless of their character's gender. That dream is now a reality! During the Monster Hunter Wilds Developer Stream at Gamescom, Capcom announced a significant change: armor sets are no longer gender-locked.

"In previous Monster Hunter games, male and female armor was separate," a Capcom developer explained while showcasing starting armors. "I'm happy to confirm that in Monster Hunter Wilds, that's no longer the case. All characters can wear any gear."

The Monster Hunter community erupted with excitement, particularly among "fashion hunters" who prioritize aesthetics alongside, or even above, raw stats. The previous limitations meant missing out on coveted armor pieces simply because of their assigned gender.

Imagine wanting to sport the Rathian skirt as a male hunter, or the imposing Daimyo Hermitaur set as a female hunter—only to find these options unavailable. This frustrating limitation often resulted in male armor leaning towards bulky designs, while female armor was sometimes more revealing than preferred.

The issue extended beyond simple aesthetics. In Monster Hunter: World, for example, a voucher system was implemented to change character gender and appearance. While the first voucher was free, subsequent changes required a purchase. This meant players who initially chose a gender but later desired the look of a specific gender-locked armor set had to pay to achieve their desired look without starting a new save.

While Capcom hasn't detailed specifics, the highly probable inclusion of a "layered armor" system, similar to previous games, will allow players to mix and match appearances without sacrificing stats. This, combined with the removal of gender-locked sets, opens up incredible possibilities for self-expression.
