Acquiring certain upgrade materials in NieR: Automata proves more challenging than others. Many are enemy drops, but some only appear as random spawns in the game world. These spawns are unpredictable, introducing an element of chance into farming them.
Filler Metal is one such material, obtainable early-game through overworld exploration (though this requires significant searching). Alternatively, a more expensive but reliable method exists later in the game.
Filler Metal is a rare drop from item spawns deep within the Factory. Its location varies with each playthrough, and its spawn rate is lower than other items. After revisiting the factory during the main story, unlock the "Factory: Hanger" access point for convenient fast travel. This is the recommended starting point for searching.
Note that you may need to unlock the "Factory: Hanger" access point again depending on your story progress.
While increased movement speed helps, reliably farming Filler Metal is impossible. The most effective strategy is to thoroughly explore the factory, collecting all naturally spawning items. However, purchasing it remains the most straightforward method if you have the resources.
Filler Metal is exclusively sold by the Shopkeeper Machine in the Amusement Park, but only after completing one of the game's final endings (requiring all three playthroughs). Using Chapter Select after completing the game will allow access to the Shopkeeper's updated inventory, where Filler Metal is priced at 11,250 G each.
Despite the high cost, this is far more efficient than repeatedly scouring the Factory. The Pod upgrades requiring Filler Metal are crucial for game completion, as enemy levels will otherwise remain significantly lower than your maximum potential.
