NIKKE Crossover Event Disappoints Players

Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 event, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, stumbled due to a combination of design compromises and a lack of player incentive.

Design Issues:

The initial character designs, created collaboratively by Shift Up and the NIKKE team, were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators. Subsequent modifications, while satisfying the licensors, failed to resonate with players. The resulting costumes, while faithful to the source material, lacked the appeal needed to excite the fanbase. Asuka's gacha skin, in particular, was criticized for being too similar to her default appearance.

Player Dissatisfaction:

Beyond the designs, players felt the limited-time characters and costumes offered insufficient value. The lack of significant visual flair, coupled with the perceived dilution of NIKKE's established identity through uninspired collaborations, led to a negative player response. The event's overall length also felt drawn out.

Looking Ahead:

Shift Up acknowledges the feedback and intends to incorporate it into future collaborations. The hope is that upcoming events will deliver more engaging content and recapture the spirit that initially made NIKKE popular. Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. The producer expressed a desire to move away from underwhelming crossovers and deliver higher-quality content in the future.
