The Nintendo Switch 2's Joy-Cons might offer a unique feature, allowing them to operate in a mode akin to a computer mouse, according to recent circumstantial evidence. While it remains uncertain whether this feature will be widely adopted by game developers, it aligns with Nintendo's tradition of innovative experimentation.
This intriguing possibility came to light thanks to Famiboards user LiC, who has been analyzing Vietnamese customs data related to shipments from a company thought to be a Nintendo parts supplier. This data has been a treasure trove of information, fueling numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC shared new findings on Famiboards, revealing that customs manifests mentioned a polyethylene (PE) plastic adhesive tape intended "to stick to game console handles." These tape pieces were labeled as "mouse soles," a term commonly used for the bottom part of a computer mouse, suggesting that the Switch 2 could potentially mimic mouse functionality.
LiC's discoveries include two specific mouse sole model numbers: LG7 and SML7. These designations are not found in public component databases, indicating they may be associated with unreleased products. According to the data, these plastic tape pieces measure 90 x 90mm, which is large enough to cover the back of the new Joy-Cons based on previously leaked dimensions. However, their square shape might require trimming before application during assembly, assuming the information is accurate.
While the idea of a mouse-like controller mode fits Nintendo's history of experimentation, it's not entirely new. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features a right controller that can function as a mouse when rotated sideways into a joystick-like shape. Lenovo even includes a circular plastic piece to enhance the controller's sliding ability on surfaces.
Additionally, the Lenovo Legion GO's 2024 model boasts magnetic rails for easy controller attachment, a feature rumored to be included in the Switch 2. This suggests that the Legion GO could provide a preview of what to expect from Nintendo's next hybrid console.
