Nintendo has rolled out a new system update for the Switch just ahead of the highly anticipated release of the Switch 2. The latest firmware, version 20.1.0, was released on May 27, 2025, and while the official patch notes are brief, they highlight several subtle but meaningful changes that align with the upcoming console’s design direction.
The most notable updates include visual adjustments to the Parental Control settings, a refreshed sound effect when launching Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) from the Home Menu, and general system stability improvements. According to early impressions, the new NSO launch sound is more energetic—possibly hinting at what Switch 2 users will hear when accessing the service on the new console.
X user @Nexusvoyager shared a side-by-side audio comparison of the old and new sounds, confirming that the change is both intentional and likely indicative of the overall tone Nintendo is aiming for with the next generation of its hybrid console. Additionally, the same user noted updated navigation sounds and a redesigned NSO app interface, which appears to mirror the UI expected on the Switch 2.

Renowned Switch firmware analyst @OatmealDome discovered additional behind-the-scenes tweaks tied to system themes. In the 20.1.0 update, “Basic White” and “Basic Black” have been renamed to “Basic Light” and “Basic Dark,” respectively. More importantly, the NSO app now supports the Basic Dark theme, enhancing consistency across system visuals.

Users must update their current Switch to version 20.1.0 before initiating a transfer to the new console—a clear sign that Nintendo is preparing the ecosystem for a seamless transition between generations.
