The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, a beloved open-world role-playing game, is reportedly being remade with a release planned for 2025. Details about the unannounced remake have surfaced online, allegedly leaked by a former employee of Virtuos, a video game support studio. Microsoft, when approached by IGN for comment, chose not to respond.
According to Mp1st, Virtuos is utilizing Unreal Engine 5 for this ambitious project, hinting at a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple remaster. The leaked information suggests significant gameplay changes, including modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the heads-up display (HUD). The Blocking mechanics are said to be revamped with inspiration from action games and Soulslikes, addressing the original's perceived monotony and frustration. Sneak icons are now supposedly highlighted, with revamped damage calculations, and the knockdown effect from depleted Stamina is reportedly more challenging to achieve. Additionally, the HUD has been redesigned for better clarity, hit reactions have been introduced for clearer feedback, and Archery has been modernized for both first and third-person views.
Rumors of an Oblivion remaster first emerged in 2023, following the leak of documents from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial concerning Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. These documents, dated July 2020, outlined a slate of unannounced Bethesda projects planned for release in subsequent years, including an "Oblivion Remaster" scheduled for the 2022 financial year. Other titles listed included an Indiana Jones game, Doom Year Zero with DLC, Project Kestrel, Project Platinum, The Elder Scrolls 6, a Fallout 3 Remaster, a Ghostwire: Tokyo sequel, Dishonored 3, and additional Doom Year Zero DLC. Several of these projects have since been delayed or canceled, with Doom Year Zero now rebranded as Doom: The Dark Ages, set to launch in the current year, and the Indiana Jones game released in December 2024.
The term "remaster" used in the Microsoft document suggests a less extensive project than the current reports of a remake. It's possible that the scope of the project expanded into a full remake, transforming one of gaming's worst-kept secrets into a highly anticipated title.
Regarding platform availability, Microsoft's current strategy focuses on multiplatform releases. With the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Oblivion remake might extend beyond PC, Xbox, and PlayStation to include this new console. Leaker NateTheHate has suggested that the Oblivion remake is slated for a June release, potentially aligning with the launch window of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Next week, Microsoft will host an Xbox Developer Direct, where id Software, owned by ZeniMax, will provide further details on Doom: The Dark Ages. Microsoft has hinted at revealing another new game from a mysterious developer, but it appears unlikely that this will be the Oblivion remake. Instead, according to Windows Central's Jez Corden, the new title is expected to be a fresh installment in a renowned Japanese franchise with a long history, promising excitement for fans.
