New Patent Reveals Features of Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con

by Stella May 30,2025

The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz, particularly due to significant updates expected in its Joy-Cons, as revealed by recently surfaced patents. Although Nintendo has yet to officially announce the console, credible reports suggest substantial changes to the Joy-Cons, including magnetic attachment capabilities and functionality akin to a computer mouse.

These modifications are now strongly supported by a batch of patents filed by Nintendo. According to the documents, the new design will allow the Joy-Cons to attach magnetically to the main body of the Switch 2, which features magnets at the base of a recessed area. The patent outlines that this setup enables the execution of game processing while offering enhanced flexibility in usage.

The patent further specifies that two buttons will be required to detach the Joy-Cons from the Switch 2 body. Positioned longitudinally on the top surface of the protrusion, these buttons utilize magnetic forces to interact with the embedded magnets for secure attachment.

Illustrations accompanying the patent depict the Joy-Cons being used as a mouse, with players gripping the controller sideways and utilizing the shoulder buttons as mouse clicks. The R1 and R2 buttons are proposed to serve as the left and right mouse buttons, respectively, while the joysticks may incorporate a scrolling mechanism.

Images showcasing these innovative features can be found via the provided link. Additionally, early leaks hinted at the magnetic attachment aspect, while the teaser video from January subtly showcased the Joy-Cons behaving like a computer mouse, reinforcing the mouse-like functionality speculation.
