Pippin Barr, a prolific solo developer known for his thought-provoking and often bizarre games, has released his latest creation: It's As If You Were On Your Phone. This new title challenges players to simulate phone use—making gestures and responding to prompts—within a near-future setting where societal pressure to conform to constant phone usage is absolute.
The game's premise is undeniably strange. IAIWOYP (as it's affectionately known) tasks players with the paradoxical act of pretending to use their phones while simultaneously avoiding actual phone use. This surreal gameplay mechanic serves as a commentary on our increasingly phone-centric society, going beyond simple "phones are bad" rhetoric.
While the gameplay itself is minimal, focusing on prompt completion, the game's artistic merit and thought-provoking nature are undeniable. It's less a traditional game and more a statement, an interactive exploration of societal pressures and conformity.
It's aaaart!!!
Should you play IAIWOYP? That depends on your openness to experimental games. If you're willing to engage with its unconventional approach and consider its underlying message, it offers a unique and rewarding experience. However, if you're looking for traditional gameplay mechanics, it might fall short of expectations. Given Barr's history of creating compelling, albeit unusual, games, it's worth considering as a unique artistic endeavor.
