Sony has donated $5 million to aid first responders, community recovery, and support programs for those affected by the devastating wildfires raging across Southern California. Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's chairman and CEO, and Hiroki Totoki, president and COO, released a joint statement on X/Twitter, emphasizing Los Angeles's significance as the home of Sony's entertainment business for over 35 years and their commitment to ongoing support for relief and recovery efforts.
The crisis, which began on January 7th, continues to cause widespread destruction across the greater Los Angeles area, with three wildfires still actively spreading. According to the BBC, the fires have tragically resulted in 24 deaths and 23 missing persons in the two largest affected zones. Firefighters are preparing for challenging conditions as stronger winds are forecast.
Sony's contribution joins those of several other corporations committed to wildfire relief. CNBC reports that Disney donated $15 million, Netflix and Comcast each pledged $10 million, the NFL contributed $5 million, Walmart gave $2.5 million, and Fox donated $1 million, among other corporate contributions.
