Pokemon TCG Pocket developers at DeNA have pledged to improve the trading feature following significant player dissatisfaction. Here's why Trainers are frustrated with the current trading mechanics.
The newly launched trading feature in Pokemon TCG Pocket has met with widespread disapproval, forcing developer DeNA to announce upcoming changes in a February 1, 2025 Twitter post.
Implemented on January 29, the much-anticipated trading system currently limits exchanges to 1-4 Diamond and 1-Star rarity cards from Genetic Apex and Mythical Island booster packs. While valuable for completing collections, the system's strict limitations (narrow card selection, new currency requirements, and high costs) have frustrated many players.
Addressing community concerns, DeNA stated they're "evaluating multiple approaches to enhance the feature." Proposed solutions include "expanding methods to earn trade tokens through special events." Currently, the system only permits 1-Star card trades.
The token economy requires players to sacrifice higher-rarity cards as payment, with more valuable cards yielding greater returns. A 4-Diamond ex Pokemon trade demands 500 tokens, yet players receive just 100 tokens for 1-Star trades or 300 tokens for higher tier 2-Star and 3-Star immersive cards. This forces collectors to sacrifice multiple rare cards for basic trades.
DeNA defended the strict rules as necessary measures: "These trading requirements were implemented to prevent bot abuse and multi-account exploitation while preserving game balance. Our priority is maintaining fairness while keeping card collection enjoyable - the core of Pokemon TCG Pocket's experience."
While full details of planned improvements remain undisclosed, developers appear to be evaluating potential exploitation risks before implementing changes.
Another controversy emerged following the January 29 release of Space-Time Smackdown booster packs. Reddit users reported the Genetic Apex packs appeared unavailable as only Mythical Island and Space-Time Smackdown showed on the home screen.
However, players can actually access all sets by selecting "Other booster packs" in the bottom right corner - a feature many missed due to its small, unintuitive design.
While some attributed this to poor UI design, others suspected intentional design to push new pack sales. Many collectors haven't completed Genetic Apex sets, leading to suggestions that DeNA should permanently display all three booster options on the home screen.
Though developers haven't officially addressed this concern, players should know Genetic Apex remains available through the pack selection interface.
