Robert Pattinson Out as DCU Batman

by Simon Apr 17,2025

James Gunn and Peter Safran have made it clear that the upcoming DCU project, *The Brave and the Bold*, will introduce a new Batman, effectively ruling out Robert Pattinson from reprising his role in this new universe. Speaking at a DC Studios presentation attended by IGN, the co-chiefs confirmed that Pattinson will continue to portray Batman exclusively within Matt Reeves' *The Batman Epic Crime Saga*.

“It's certainly not the plan,” Gunn stated firmly about the possibility of Pattinson crossing over into the DCU. Safran echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the necessity of introducing a new Batman into the DCU. “And we love him, but we've got to introduce a Batman into the DCU. That's imperative. And so that's the plan with *The Brave and the Bold*,” he added.

The speculation around Pattinson's potential involvement in the broader DCU stemmed from comments made by Reeves earlier in the year. Reeves hinted at the possibility of a crossover, noting, “It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense,” during an interview with Josh Horowitz at the Golden Globes. He stressed his commitment to the *Epic Crime Saga* and appreciated the support from Gunn and Safran, but left future possibilities open-ended.

Safran expressed enthusiasm for Reeves’ vision for *The Batman Part 2*, stating that both he and Gunn are eagerly anticipating the film. He noted that while Reeves has yet to submit a final script, what they've seen so far is promising.

Meanwhile, *The Brave and the Bold* is in "very active development," with Gunn and Safran working closely on the script. The project's direction remains under wraps, but Safran hinted that more details will be shared soon. Regarding the involvement of *The Flash* director Andy Muschietti, Safran said they will present the script to him once it's ready and assess if it suits his directorial vision.

The release of *The Batman Part 2* has been delayed to October 1, 2027, marking a five-year gap since Robert Pattinson first donned the cape. When questioned about the potential release window for *The Brave and the Bold*, Safran was coy, only confirming that a Batman movie is scheduled for October 2027.

While fans await more details on *The Brave and the Bold*, a brief glimpse of Batman in Episode 6 of *Creature Commandos* provided some insight into Gunn's vision for the character. The silhouette of Batman, standing on a rooftop and observing crime boss Doctor Phosphorus, was intentionally generic, as Gunn requested a more shadowy depiction to keep his full vision under wraps.

Gunn clarified that this cameo confirms Batman's established presence within the DCU, making an origin story unnecessary. He also hinted at future collaborations, expressing excitement about the prospect of Batman teaming up with Superman, stating, “This is the DCU Batman... I just love Batman. I love him. I've loved him since I was a little kid. He's one of my favorite characters... He's the most popular superhero in the world and I can't wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman, and together.”
