Doom 64, the iconic demon-slaying FPS from 1997, could soon be making its way to current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. This anticipation stems from an updated ESRB rating that now includes these platforms. Id Software's Doom series has always been a favorite among gamers, and the prospect of revisiting this classic on modern hardware is thrilling for many.
Originally exclusive to the Nintendo 64, Doom 64 wasn't accessible to all gamers back in the day. However, a 2020 port brought it to the PS4 and Xbox One with enhanced graphics and an additional chapter. Now, as these older consoles begin to age, Bethesda seems poised to keep the N64 classic alive with a new release.
Although neither Bethesda nor id Software have officially confirmed the new port, the updated ESRB rating is a strong indicator. Typically, games receive ratings close to their release date, ensuring the label accurately reflects the game's content. The ESRB has a history of revealing ratings before official announcements, as seen with Felix the Cat's re-release in 2023, which turned out to be accurate.
The updated ESRB rating hints that Doom 64 could hit the PS5 and Xbox Series X in the near future. Historically, ESRB ratings have preceded game releases by just a few months, suggesting that fans might not have to wait long to experience the N64 classic on modern consoles. While the new rating doesn't mention a PC version, the 2020 port was available on Steam, and mods can transform classic Doom titles into Doom 64. Given Bethesda's history of stealth-launching old Doom ports, fans should stay alert for a surprise release, especially since Doom 64 already has a rating without an official announcement.
Looking ahead, Doom fans have more to anticipate. Rumors indicate that Doom: The Dark Ages might receive an official release date in January, with a full launch expected in 2025. By re-releasing beloved classics like Doom 64, Bethesda is setting the stage for fans to gear up for the next chapter in this enduring franchise.
