Rescuing Sam During "Reckoning"

As you near the end of the main quest line, you'll discover that Sam is being held captive at Praguer's Camp, captured by Brabant. The opportunity to save him arises during the main quest "Reckoning." However, freeing Sam isn't as simple as strolling into the camp. You'll need to choose between a stealthy infiltration or a more aggressive approach.

To navigate the camp without raising alarms, you'll need a guard's outfit. You can acquire one by either killing a guard and stealing their attire, making sure to hide the body afterward, or by searching the numerous chests scattered around the camp. Once you're disguised, you can freely explore the camp to locate Sam.

When to Rescue Sam

After freeing Sam, it's not yet time to escort him out of the camp. Sam will inform you about von Aulitz, another important figure also present in the camp. It's advisable to deal with von Aulitz first, then secure a horse, before returning to Sam to facilitate his escape. Sam can wait safely while you handle these tasks, making the sequence more manageable since you'll need to carry him to the horse.

Von Aulitz can be found in the main part of the camp. With your guard outfit on, the guards at his door will allow you entry without question. Upon finding von Aulitz, who is already dying, he requests a dignified death. You can honor this request, which is considered the most honorable choice, or you can choose to kill him cruelly or leave him to die slowly. Interestingly, leaving him to die actually contributes towards the best ending.

Your final steps involve returning to Sam in the barn where you left him. If a guard questions your actions with Sam, simply say you're moving the body to avoid suspicion. Exit the camp through the gates, turn right, and follow the perimeter until you reach the stables.
