Argentine director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on the It remakes and The Flash, has provided a much-anticipated update on the Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Sony Pictures announced the development of the live-action adaptation back in 2009, with the game's director, Fumito Ueda, joining the project. Initially, Chronicle director Josh Trank was set to helm the film, but he had to step down due to scheduling conflicts before Muschietti took over.
In addition to the Shadow of the Colossus project, Sony recently unveiled plans for more live-action adaptations of its popular games at CES 2025. This includes a new Helldivers movie, despite comparisons to the 1997 sci-fi film Starship Troopers, as well as a Horizon Zero Dawn movie and a Ghost of Tsushima animation.
During an interview on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso program, Muschietti reassured fans that the Shadow of the Colossus film is far from abandoned. He acknowledged the lengthy development period but pointed out that factors such as the game's popularity and the project's budget are still under consideration. "There are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and desire to make it, but with how popular an intellectual property like this is," Muschietti explained. He also mentioned that the project's budget is still being debated and that he has a preferred script among the various versions that exist.
Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation Gets Update From Director
Other projects have drawn inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus, such as Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2 in 2024, but Sony's original action-adventure game remains a beloved classic. Muschietti, who described himself as not a "big gamer," praised the game as a "masterpiece" and confirmed he has played it multiple times.
Fumito Ueda, the mastermind behind Shadow of the Colossus, has since founded his own studio, GenDesign. At The Game Awards 2024, GenDesign announced a new sci-fi game that echoes the isolating atmosphere of the 2005 epic. Despite the high-definition remakes concluding with the PlayStation 4 release in 2018, Shadow of the Colossus continues to leave a lasting legacy, with hopes that the live-action adaptation will both honor its fans and attract new audiences to its enchanting world.
