Silksong Dev Hints at Nintendo Switch 2 with Cake Image

by Nicholas May 16,2025

It’s been six years since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to their 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece, Hollow Knight. Over these years, fans have been on a rollercoaster of hope and disappointment, with Silksong appearing and disappearing from various showcases. At one point, Microsoft seemed to confirm that the game would launch before June 2023, but The Game Awards came and went without any Silksong news. Now, with the recent announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, could this finally be the moment fans have been waiting for?

The buzz among fans is palpable, and it all stems from a seemingly innocuous picture of a cake. Let me explain.

Astute fans on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15, Team Cherry's co-director William Pellen changed his Twitter/X profile picture to an image of a chocolate cake. Pellen then tweeted: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

At the time, rumors were swirling that Nintendo would unveil the Switch 2 on January 16, which indeed happened. While Nintendo announced the Switch 2, many questions about the next-gen console remain unanswered. Was Pellen hinting at the Switch 2 reveal? If so, why?

This is where the Hollow Knight community's speculation went into overdrive. Fans reverse-searched the cake image, leading them to a recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake on the Bon Appétit website, published on April 2, 2024. Why is this date significant? Because Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 will air on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Fans believe Pellen has initiated a Silksong alternate reality game (ARG) with his tweet and the cake picture.

But the detective work doesn’t stop there. Fans are now dissecting Pellen’s new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, for clues. Redditor Representative-True has a compelling theory: “The character limit on Twitter handles is 15 characters, which is the length of ‘everydruidwaswr.’ I think ‘wr’ is likely the start of a word, like wrong or something. I have yet to decipher this, but the Druid of the Moss Temple is a Silksong NPC.”

The mystery deepens with Pellen's new X/Twitter name, "little bomey." Fans have pointed out that Little Boomey is a wine from Southern Australia, where Team Cherry is based, though the spelling differs. What could this signify?

It’s important to recall that when Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced, Team Cherry confirmed launch platforms as Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But that was six years ago. Could Nintendo have secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title? Is it a timed exclusive? Or is this all just the wild speculation of fans desperate for news?

We’ll find out in a few months. In the meantime, take a look at everything announced at Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
