by Scarlett Mar 25,2025

Excitement is in the air as DC's next cinematic venture, *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow*, has officially begun filming. To mark this significant milestone, DC Studios' head, James Gunn, took to Bluesky to share the first glimpse of Milly Alcock in her role as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. The photo features Alcock seated in her actor's chair, marking a thrilling start to the project.

In his announcement, Gunn expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Thrilled to see camera roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El." This confirms that Craig Gillespie, known for his work on *Cruella* and *I, Tonya*, will be directing the film, as previously reported in April.

While specifics about the plot remain under wraps, it's known that *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* draws heavily from the acclaimed graphic novel by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira. The story follows an alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll who seeks Supergirl's help to avenge her father's murder by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. This comic was nominated for "Best Limited Series" at the 2022 Eisner Awards and is highly recommended for those yet to experience its narrative depth.

The film's cast boasts an impressive lineup, with Matthias Schoenaerts portraying Krem, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, David Krumholtz as Supergirl's father Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother, and Jason Momoa stepping into the role of Lobo within the DC universe.

*Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* marks the second film in the newly rebooted DC universe, following James Gunn's *Superman*, set to hit theaters this summer. Other projects in development include *The Batman Part II*, which may or may not connect to Gunn's overarching narrative, and a rumored *Clayface* movie directed by Mike Flanagan.
