Tencent Acquires Major Stake in Kuro Games, Creator of Wuthering Waves

by Aiden May 20,2025

Tencent has further entrenched its position in the gaming industry by securing a 51% controlling stake in Kuro Games, the developers of the popular RPG Wuthering Waves. This acquisition marks another strategic move for Tencent, which already boasts significant investments in gaming giants like Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, and FromSoftware. The deal involved Tencent purchasing a 37% share from Hero Entertainment, positioning it as the sole external shareholder of Kuro Games.

Despite the shift in ownership, Kuro Games has reassured its employees through an internal memo that it will continue to operate independently, much like other Tencent-owned studios such as Riot Games and Supercell. This approach allows Kuro Games to retain creative control over their projects, ensuring the unique vision and quality of Wuthering Waves remain intact.

Wuthering Waves has been gaining traction with its engaging combat system and captivating storyline, drawing in millions of players. The current version 1.4 update has introduced exciting new content, including the Somnoire: Illusive Realms mode and two new characters, along with various weapons and upgrades. Players can also take advantage of Wuthering Waves codes to claim free rewards and enhance their gaming experience.

Looking forward, the upcoming version 2.0 update promises to expand the game's universe with the introduction of Rinascita, a new nation ripe for exploration, and new characters like Carlotta and Roccia. Additionally, Wuthering Waves is set to make its debut on the PlayStation 5, broadening its reach across all major platforms.

With the infusion of resources from Tencent, Kuro Games is poised for enhanced long-term stability, paving the way for further development of Wuthering Waves and future projects.
