Voice Actors Learn of Replacement via Patch Notes in Zenless Zone Zero

by Ethan Mar 31,2025

In a recent development, two voice actors from the game Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) discovered their replacements through the game's patch notes, amid ongoing tensions surrounding generative AI protections in the video game industry. The Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is currently engaged in a dispute with game developers over the use of AI to replicate performances, a practice that has significant implications for the future of voice acting.

ZZZ, crafted by HoYoverse, the creators of Genshin Impact, is not directly affected by the strike as it predates the strike's commencement on July 25, 2024. Nonetheless, voice actors are taking a stand by refusing to sign new contracts without a SAG Interim Agreement, showing solidarity with their striking peers.

Emeri Chase, the voice behind Soldier 11, expressed their stance clearly: "I was replaced as Soldier 11 because I am unwilling to perform work not covered by a SAG Interim Agreement during a strike for AI protection, which will shape the future of our industry." Similarly, Nicholas Thurkettle, who voiced Lycaon and is not a union member, has also been replaced.

Chase elaborated on the situation via a thread on Bluesky, noting the distinction between projects that are "struck" and those not covered by Interim Agreements. "Union projects started before the strike and non-union projects aren't 'struck,' but they don't offer the AI protections we're advocating for," Chase explained. Many actors, including Chase, are choosing to withhold their work from such projects to bolster the union's efforts.

Chase had anticipated the possibility of being replaced but expressed hope that HoYoverse would keep Soldier 11 silent until their return. "I found out the role was recast today alongside all of you," Chase stated. Thurkettle shared his surprise and disappointment, noting a lack of communication from HoYoverse and Sound Cadence since October despite his availability.

Thurkettle, despite not being part of SAG-AFTRA, highlighted the broader threat AI poses to the industry. "I took a personal stand to ask for protection, willing to give up the best opportunity in my professional life. I stand by my choice," he affirmed.

IGN has reached out to HoYoverse for a comment on the situation.

This incident echoes a similar case involving Activision and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, where beloved Zombies characters were recast amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. Activision acknowledged the recasting to Game Developer, confirming that characters William Peck and Samantha Maxis are now voiced by new, uncredited actors. Zeke Alton, the original voice of William Peck, expressed concerns about the impact on his professional reputation due to the lack of crediting for the new actor.
